Sustainability Program

01 — Purpose & Sustainability Commitment

Sustainability in every phase.

Blue Terra Group is committed to embedding sustainability into every phase of our projects — design, procurement, construction, and closeout. Our goal is to minimize environmental impact while maximizing the long-term value, efficiency, and resilience of every project we deliver. Through thoughtful planning, responsible sourcing, and continuous improvement, we integrate sustainable practices that support both client objectives and community well-being.

02 — Pillar 1

Low-impact construction & on-site sustainable practices.

Blue Terra Group is committed to delivering high-performance, environmentally responsible construction projects by integrating low-impact, practical, and cost-effective measures across every job site. Our approach reduces environmental footprint, improves safety and efficiency, and aligns with client expectations for sustainable building practices — without adding unnecessary complexity or cost.

Low-impact construction focuses on three core objectives:

  • Reduce waste and resource use, and promote reuse
  • Protect soil, water, and air quality
  • Enhance site energy efficiency and environmental performance

03 — Pillar 2

Procurement & sustainable materials.

Blue Terra Group is committed to strengthening the communities in which we build. Whenever feasible, we prioritize local suppliers, subcontractors, and service partners to reduce transportation emissions, shorten lead times, and support the regional economy.

  • Sourcing materials locally to minimize the carbon footprint associated with long-distance transport
  • Engaging local subcontractors and trades, helping sustain skilled employment within the community
  • Building long-term partnerships with regional vendors who align with our quality, safety, and sustainability standards
  • Investing in community-based businesses, reinforcing economic resilience and keeping project value in the local area

Through these commitments, Blue Terra Group actively supports a stronger, more sustainable local supply chain while delivering efficient, environmentally responsible projects.

04 — Pillar 3

Environmental and health & safety certifications.

LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design)

Blue Terra Group integrates LEED-aligned sustainability practices across planning, procurement, construction, and closeout — supporting clients in achieving recognized environmental outcomes while improving long-term building performance. Project execution is structured to align with LEED v4 and v4.1 credit requirements, including:

  • Sustainable Sites
  • Materials & Resources
  • Indoor Environmental Quality
  • Construction Activity Pollution Prevention
  • Energy Management
  • Water Management

Projects target high landfill diversion rates (typically ≥75%) through documented waste management plans, recycling streams, and material reuse — directly supporting LEED Materials & Resources credits. Preference is given to low-VOC materials, responsibly sourced products, and efficient building systems that enhance occupant health and environmental performance. Sustainability expectations are embedded into subcontractor procurement and ESG evaluations, ensuring alignment across the supply chain.

Projects are selected for review and approval by the Canada Green Building Council for a LEED v4.1 — Building Design & Construction accreditation or LEED v4.1 — Interior Design & Construction accreditation. To ensure each submission receives approval, we implement a structured project plan:

  • Establish clear goals and objectives — define the project's sustainability goals and LEED v4.1 targets
  • Conduct a LEED v4.1 feasibility study — assess the project's potential for achieving credits and identify areas for improvement
  • Develop a credit-by-credit strategy — a detailed plan for each credit, including responsible team members and timelines
  • Establish a documentation and submission schedule — coordinate submissions to ensure timely compliance

COR Certification (Certificate of Recognition)

COR® is a nationally recognized health and safety certification that verifies a company has implemented a comprehensive, audited Occupational Health & Safety Management System (OHSMS) meeting or exceeding provincial regulatory standards. In Ontario it is administered by the IHSA (Infrastructure Health & Safety Association). The COR certification Blue Terra Group holds demonstrates a strong safety culture across the following pillars:

  • Formal health & safety management system — written policy signed by leadership, defined roles and accountability, documented safe work practices
  • Hazard identification & risk control — Job Hazard Analyses, Site-Specific Safety Plans, ongoing inspections and corrective actions
  • Training & competency — supervisor competency and mandatory Ontario training, worker orientations and toolbox talks, subcontractor onboarding and verification
  • Incident reporting & continuous improvement — near-miss and incident reporting, root cause analysis, management review and corrective action tracking
  • Subcontractor safety management — safety prequalification, COR® recognition or equivalent preferred, enforcement of Blue Terra Group expectations on site

05 — Implementation

Kickoff, pre-construction, execution, closeout.

Sustainability and health & safety objectives and KPIs are established at project kickoff, embedded into procurement and construction planning, actively monitored during execution, and formally reported at project closeout.

06 — Governance

Governance & continuous improvement.

Blue Terra Group ensures sustainability is not a one-off initiative but an integrated, accountable, and continuously improving capability across all projects. Clear governance structures, defined roles, and measurable review processes enable consistent performance and long-term progress.

Annual internal sustainability performance review

  • Company-wide assessment of sustainability outcomes across all projects
  • Analysis of waste diversion rates, energy use, material choices and H&S integration
  • Identification of trends, lessons learned, and improvement opportunities
  • Results incorporated into the next year's goals, targets, and training priorities
  • Tracking key KPIs at both project and company level
  • Reporting summarized for leadership review and shared with clients as part of closeout documentation

Supplier & subcontractor sustainability evaluation

  • Annual or project-based evaluation of subcontractors using outlined metrics
  • Preferred supplier lists updated based on performance, reward programs, and capability to meet Blue Terra Group sustainability expectations

Continuous process updates & training

  • Annual updates to sustainability procedures within Blue Terra Group SOPs and project kickoff materials
  • Sharing of best practices and new technologies through toolbox talks, internal workshops, and lessons-learned reviews
  • Updates to checklists, reporting templates, and subcontractor scopes of work

Innovation & industry alignment

  • Regular review of emerging regulations, technologies, and sustainable construction practices in Ontario and Canada
  • Participation in industry associations, learning programs, and supplier showcases
  • Integration of new tools such as digital waste tracking, carbon estimating software, and high-efficiency equipment as they become available
